R&D Scientist Sr

Background

  • Works under general direction of the Lab Director in a c-GMP regulated manufacturing environment operating under Q7A standards.
  • Employees in positions at this level of the series independently evaluate, select and apply standard scientific techniques, processes and criteria that assess issues related to chemical products; plant processes and production (quality, rate, processing alternatives, raw materials).  They use judgment in making complex adaptations.  Employees may supervise a staff in some or all phases of a research project.

Tasks

  • Analyze all technical aspects of assigned projects to develop and support new and existing products through process development and validation; determine methods and techniques to be used and principles to be applied to improve QC methods and assist in QA compliance
  • Design and develop plans and/or systems to initiate new products and/or improve manufacturing ability of existing products (from process development to packaging)
  • Prepare components for experiments to provide product/process characterization and documentation
  • Direct and participate in pilot runs on development of new/improved products and processes (including test and assessment of new equipment purchases); evaluate results including cost analysis
  • Provide information, consulting support and advisement to both internal and external customers
  • Form conclusions on experiments conducted
  • Write technical work plans and contribute to contract acquisition; may prepare, co-author, publish and deliver technical papers
  • Adhere to all safety and quality requirements; enhance site safety
  • Maintain currency with the relevant scientific literature
  • Maintain and troubleshoot equipment and procedures; define process equipment requirements and determine needed equipment and/or engineering functionality
  • Train, direct, supervise and motivate various levels of staff
  • Search literature and apply that information to resolution of research topics; use of imagination to generate novel ideas or applications to the resolution of process issue

Specifications

  • M.S. degree, with a research thesis requirement, in a Chemical, Biological, Food Science or related field.
  • Five (5) years of industrial R&D experience, two (2) years of which as may be gained at the next lower level of this series
  • Knowledge of:
    • Theories, principles, methods and procedures of research chemistry (Expert level)
    • Mathematics and statistics (Extensive level)
    • Plant equipment, reaction chemistry, analytical chemistry, crystallization techniques, lab-to-plant scale-up and product quality
    • MS Office software package
  • Skill in:
    • Working effectively and efficiently on multiple projects at once
    • Working effectively in a team environment, including in-depth collaboration between production and process divisions
    • Responding to rapidly changing demands
  • Ability to:
    • Supervise, train and/or coordinate the activities of subordinates involved in research activities
    • Develop creative solutions to complex research procedural problems
    • Collect, process and record research data accurately
    • Design and manage projects
    • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing (including documenting research methods, results and conclusions)
    • Exercise judgment while being insightful, logical and methodical
